black and white barn

Standing at the countertop with its uneven tiling and it’s sad droopy top, I stared Dick down. He had trouble meeting my eyes at first, but then he looked straight at me and lied through his teeth. He leaned across the counter and snarled, “I say the house is done.”

“With no garage doors? With no glass panel in the front door? (the wind was blowing through the space where the panel should be while we were standing there. I had put cardboard in it previously but took it out before Dick got there for the dramatic effect of wind blowing through the house). The toilets and sinks are different colors, the lights on the outside are not the ones I ordered, there are no appliances, I could go on and on.”

He leaned across the island and stared me in the eyes, “If I were you, I’d release that last draw so you won’t have to deal with me anymore.”

I felt a chill go down my spine. My trigger finger twitched nervously on my cell phone. We were all alone in a half finished house on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere and he is a lot stronger than I am. I sighed dramatically.

“Fine”, I said. “I’ll call the mortgage broker as soon as you leave an tell her to cut you a check.”

“You better”, he said walking out the front door, leaving it open even though it was about 20 degrees. I pulled out my phone and showed him it through the window and then dialed the number of my attorney.

He wasn’t getting one more dime of my hard earned money. There was no way in HELL that I was going to release that last draw!

I was just thinking today that I might get this printed on canvas and hang it in the bar area. Great minds think alike, girlfriend!

  7. VBR Says:

Oy! This is almost unreal. My heart just aches for this garbage you are having to go through. I am so sorry that this is happening. Not much comfort but K is also for Karma. And, you know what they say about that!

Also, a question? when you have work of this magnitude done, are there building permits? Does a building inspector have to come and sign off on the job?

  8. Rocky Mountain Woman Says:

    VBR,

Yes there are inspectors, but they don’t care about cosmetic stuff just structural…

    xxoo,

    RMW

  9. Teresa Says:

You go girl! I say he should be planted as fertilizer for you yet to be planted flower beds. I can’t believe this nightmare is still going on. In all honesty, he does deserve to go to jail for fraud.

  10. sandy Says:

I was hoping to hear your troubles
    were getting better… shame you
could not just fire the contractor
and get your money back.. start over
    with someone new…
    Best of luck
    Sandy

  11. Maggie Mallard Says:

OH no! I am so sorry your going through all of this in trying to build your dream home. It’s a nightmare and I am so glad you called your attorney.
Great Writing though had me worried right to the end.
    Love
    Maggie

  12. Momma Fargo Says:

Beautiful pic! Stick to your guns, lady! Don’t let him rip you off. You and your attorney can go after him and you have lots of evidence against him so that you don’t throw your money away. Hugs!

  13. Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella Says:

I’m so glad that you’re rid of him. My blood is boiling for you because I know how much they can have you over a barrel (from personal experience) and it must be hard dealing with this by yourself RMW! :D

  14. Lola Says:

Kool kaptures – but a bit scary!

  15. Phyllis Ryan Says:

Dick has been a thorn in your side since you began the “she builds” project. He promised, but never came through. What is he going to do if you don’t pay him, kick out the panel in your front door. Ohhh.

Grab your attorney and if need be all your readers will testify.

  16. JDaniel4's Mom Says:

I have been waiting for this. It does sounds a little scary.

  17. Judie McEwen Says:

Several years ago I dealt with something similiar, and I took many detailed photos of the shoddy work to present if my case had to go to court. It can’t hurt!!

  18. Marysol Says:

Oh, this brings back memories, and not good ones.

First of all, living in the middle of nowhere, try to keep yourself safe and arm yourself with a good lawyer (the support of a bunch of angry bloggers wouldn’t hurt either). Too bad you couldn’t record his threats somehow.

I hope everything works out for you, and that creep gets it, where it really hurts.

  19. Jim Says:

Hi Lady R.M. ~~ That view of the little winding road up the hill and house beside, all specked with patches of snow, is just plain beautiful. Thank you.

I am sorry that it had to come to this but good riddance is good business here. I also do believe that he owes you money instead of him owing you. But be careful, I hear all the day of upset people going on the rampage with a gun or car or whatever.

And sing this song to yourself:

    Good Riddance

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don’t ask why
It’s not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf of good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth it was worth all the while

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

  20. Jamie J Says:

Wow! What a story (despite the c*%p you’re going through). I hope you end up with the best house in the area after all of this hassle. Best of luck to you!

  21. Judy Sheldon-Walker Says:

Such a nice location; so sad that he is being such a jerk. Would anyone else have gotten paid half as much with as little effort. I would advice him that I was a well followed blogger and was posting up photos of his calamities for the world to see. Ohh, the wonders of public relations!!

  22. Barb Says:

A horror story. What an incompetent bully your contractor is – hope you get justice!

  23. storybeader Says:

sorry you have to go through so much hassle. But you’re right, you shouldn’t give in unless absolutely necessary. Will be waiting to see what happens. {:-D

  24. Rocky Mountain Woman Says:

Jim! You Rock! I love that little song and will sing it every time I get discouraged….

    RMW

  25. Rocky Mountain Woman Says:

    Phyllis,

How cool would it be if we all showed up in court?
    HAH!

  26. Scudds Says:

I’m sorry that you are going through this problem. The contractor is such a “his name”! We all do hope you get justice.

    All the best,

Love the photography! But the story part is kind of scary…

  28. Emille/Jesh StG Says:

Wow, I didn’t know you had a writing streak. A serious one! Now you let us wait FOR A WHOLE WEEK for the story to continue????

  29. Pondside Says:

Oh my goodness – this is getting tense. The only thing relieving the tension is the certain knowledge that you are writing in the past tense, so you are still HERE!

  30. Anne Says:

Kinda scary story but kool photo! I dislike kreepy kontractors ripping off honest hard working friends!

  31. Vicki Says:

He sure has a high opinion of himself doesn’t he? He does crappy work and then threatens you??? Wonder how his work and attitude would be if you were a man. Way different I’m pretty sure. All he is a little boy bully in a mans body.

  32. Jenny Matlock Says:

    Oh.

    Man.

    What a jerk.

Do you want me to sic my weiner dog on him?

    Seriously.

He is on the road to some seriously bad karma.

I’m gritting my teeth at this jerk while I’m giving you an A+!

  33. Rocky Mountain Woman Says:

    Jenny,

He’s just a bully. I’ll bet your weiner dog could take him on!!!

    xxoo,

    RMW

  34. Rocky Mountain Woman Says:

    Anne:
