Wow! Things are happening around here, countertops are in, some of the cabinets are in, the doors are in, some of the light fixtures are in, bathroom fixtures are in. There are just a few problems:

The countertops are all crooked, so you can’t put anything on them.

The cabinet fronts don’t have glass in them and there is no stove, refrigerator, dishwasher. I do, however, have a cooler and a hot plate and a coffee pot…

Things are getting done, they are just getting done wrong or incomplete. The light fixtures are the cheapest ones sold at Home Depot. The doors don’t have knobs.

The toilets are a different color from the sinks and the tubs are yet another color (all beige, just different shades of beige).

I call Dick every night when I get home from work and leave rambling, complaining voice mails that he ignores. He comes in the next morning and does more shoddy work. It’s ridiculous, incredibly frustrating…

I’m not sure what to do, but something is going to have to change here and soon…

to be continued…

  1. Sandy Says:

I’m confused, why do you keep calling Dick…
I’d have to toss him out the door!
Take a breath and hopefully you will get
the work done properly if you stand your
ground… or did I miss something? Maybe
I need to read more posts.
    Good luck!
    Sandy

  2. JDaniel4's Mom Says:

I know you can straighten him out. I think you have done it before.

  3. Stacia Says:

Hooray for hot plates! And good luck ditching Dick!

  4. Carol Says:

Quite the project ~ Will be beautiful! Great post for ‘J’ ~

    (A Creative Harbor) ^_^

  5. Sue at Naperville Now Says:

Ya gotta get a guy, as we say in Chicago, and preferably one who knows what he’s doing. Fire this one and ask around to see if anyone has a recommendation. Hang in there. Anything is possible, as long as you have coffee in the morning. Half and Half also, but that’s just my preference.

  6. Momma Fargo Says:

Progress is coming along. Do you need to Taser Dick to whip him into shape? Keep on him to have him get it right. You have a great view…love it!

  7. Annette Says:

So sorry your going through this. Hang in there, get tough and find you a new person!

  8. Teresa Says:

I am so sorry. I was hoping you were actually getting close to the home of your dreams.

  9. VBR Says:

If you haven’t paid this dude fully, it may be time to tell him – no more money until he fixes the problems, or maybe he would like to go on a little junket, a jaunt, a journey, to NY to visit Judge Judy.. This man is not being very fair at all.
I am so sorry that you are having to continually prod this guy to do the job correctly.

  10. Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella Says:

I’m so sorry to hear about what you’re going through. We had a similarly incompetent tradesperson do our bathroom and we’re still paying for things that are going wrong. *HUGS*

  11. Jim Says:

Nice posting for “J” word, R.M, but the things you are telling are of a horrible experience.

Like your previous posts, I do hope they are written after the fact and that you have figured out how to make things right. It seems that ‘Bill’ has a problem doing right. It is a wonder that he could pound a nail without bending it.

  12. Barbara Says:

    OMG
This is so familiar. I just had to redo a bunch of things some incompetent tradesmen did. I feel for you…so frustrating. I got nowhere with the original group, bit the bullet and hired someone who cost more money, but got the job done.
I hope you can get everyone in line and end up with exactly what you want.

  13. Lola Says:

Oh dear! Hope it all works out OK in the end!

  14. Esther Joy Says:

It’s going to be SO nice!

  15. Leovi Says:

Yes, you’re right, that kitchen is a real problem.

  16. storybeader Says:

oh, RMW! It’s hard to give advice when lots of $$ is concerned. But it sounds like you need to find another contractor! The bathroom doesn’t sound bad – you’ve got plumbing, right? Kitchens are a bitch, and I know how much you’d love a nice kitchen. So I’d concentrate there. Good luck. {:-Deb

  17. Judy Sheldon-Walker Says:

I have a similar unfinished project in my home and it is frustrating!! Good luck.

  18. Vicki Says:

So sorry for the mess you’re in. I think if it was me, I wouldn’t pay him another cent (hopefully he hasn’t been fully paid yet) until he fixed things the correct way. How can someone do such awful work? Seems like word of mouth would have killed his business long ago!

Hope things work out for you soon. Once it’s finished it will be amazing!

  19. Gattina Says:

Unfortunately I couldn’t find why you had to move and build, but for an outsider like me your story and pictures are very funny ! Looks like a “black humor” movie !

  20. Tracy Says:

Dealing with builders nt good, hope you don’t loose any sleep or hair

  21. Sue Anderson Says:

Oh my goodness. All I can say is that Dick IS one.

    If you get my meaning.

  22. Jenny Matlock Says:

Oh my… This brings back memories of my kitchen disaster a couple years ago…

And despite the disaster you still expressed your gratitude for the few things you do have…

    Way to stay positive…

Just take it a day at a time and before you know it you will be Jumping up and down with Joy…

Great Job for the letter J…

    A+

  23. Pondside Says:

Oh boy – you have your work cut out for you….and the patience of Job. I would giving Dick the old Heave Ho’ and out the door. What a terrible workman.
