The Language of Flowers
Written by Rocky Mountain Woman on June 1, 2012 – 5:51 am -A sweet story of how love can reclaim a person’s spirit. Written with sensitivity, passion and understanding. I found myself cheering for the flawed main character to heal and identifying with her adoptive mother, Elizabeth who was trying to help her heal. I’ve always felt that feeding people is the ultimate way to show love. When I want to connect and bond with someone, the first thing I think of is food. Elizabeth and Grant feed Victoria in an effort to help her heal. Grant even learns to cook so that he can nuture Victoria by feeding her.
“You know that old question, if you could eat only five foods for the rest of your life, what would they be? … Donuts, roasted chicken, cheesecake, and butternut squash soup, extra hot.”
These words of Victoria resonated with me because my way of nurturing the people I love is to roast a chicken. It’s my ultimate comfort food and the one I love to share with friends and family. Sometimes I just roast one because I love the way the house smells and it just makes me feel good to do it.
Simple and wonderful…
I try to find a free range organic chicken. They really do taste better and we are doing more than just cooking here, we’re making a statement about home and family.
Elementary, my dear Watson you may say, anyone can roast a chicken! But, I have roasted a lot of chickens in my day and eaten a lot of roast chicken and have come to the conclusion that simple is the way to go. Here is how I do it…
Cut a lemon in half and stick both halves in the cavity of the bird.
rub or brush some olive oil on the breast and salt lightly with Kosher salt. I typically cut a few large baking potatoes in half and put them in the pan also
Roast in an oven preheated to 375 degrees until a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees (about an hour for a two pound chicken and 2 hours for a 4 pound chicken)
The great thing about roasted chicken is all the free time you get while it’s roasting. I usually open a bottle of Pinot Noir, take off my shoes, put something wonderful on the stereo and dance around the kitchen like a crazy woman while I wait for my guests and this
Simple, wonderfully good and typically lots of leftovers to share…
Make one soon for someone who needs some nurturing. It’ll feel so good!

Hi RMW! Your roasted chicken looks delicious~ there is nothing better in my mind than the aroma of one cooking~ it smells like comfort and home to me!
I loved this book too, I’ll probably work on my review later this month, I’ve been out of town and will come back and link your post to mine. Sadly Jain is no longer doing FFT. She isn’t blogging at all anymore with Blogger’s new format~ she couldn’t get to her dashboard and refused to download Chrome to all her computers
Since it’s her baby, I feel strange about continuing without her. Fun while it lasted and it made me read with new eyes and always tickled my taste buds! Thanks for joining in the fun while it lasted

I haven’t read the book, but it sounds like one I’d like.
There’s nothing better than a perfect roast chicken! Lemons, onions and herbs inside, then just salt and pepper is what I like to do. A little pinot would be good too!

A friend told me that she didn’t believe organic or free range chicken tasted any better but I had to disagree! And looking at yours, it looks amazing and what I like is how full of meat it is too

Thank you honey for telling me about this book. You know me I am always looking for a great read.
I so wish we lived closer because I too love to dance around the kitchen when things are cooking. hahaha
Could we have been twins separated at birth. Except I am too old to be your twin.
So glad you came by and entered the giveaway. I was excited when they wrote and ask me to have one again. I think their site is awesome.
Your previous post reminds me so much of how I was feeling today.
Like I said I wish we were neighbors
Love

At our old house I would go outside and pick fresh lemons and rosemary and use an onion from my garden to stuff the cavity.
DEEEElicious!

That’s it? Are you sure? I’ve never tried roasted chicken, since the recipes seemed complicated, or a lot of work!
Bytheway, I tried your Asparagus-Brie Penne pasta, and it was delicious! But I didn’t use any salt in the pasta (I used whole wheat penne).
