A Visitor This Morning

My little grandson is staying with me for a few days. He came running in the house to tell me that we had a chicken in the front yard. Some of my neighbors have chickens, so it isn’t a big deal to see one in the yard now and again. I said something along the lines of “That’s nice, sweetie”, but he wouldn’t let me alone until I went out to see the chicken. Well, it wasn’t a chicken, it was a beautiful, sweet Sage Grouse. She didn’t move a muscle when I snuck back in the house to get my camera and let me take a few shots of her

Have you ever seen Sage Grouse featured in a nature show? The males are very showy and strut and puff up their chests (kind of like men), and the females are just plain janes, but pretty in their own way.

She would not move even when I tried to flush her because I was afraid my grandson would try to pick her up. Then I started looking around and over in the bushes, there was a little tiny baby sage grouse. When I tried to take his picture, she went nuts and I figured we had stressed her out enough, so I talked my grandson into going back in the house with me until she could figure out how to get her baby safe. When we went out a few hours later they were both gone…

I’ve always wondered what a grouse bird looks like. I have heard them referred to in cook books dare I say but we don’t have them here in Australia. What beautiful looking birds they are and how fortunate you were to have one in your garden and great that you managed to take a few images. What a thrill for your grandson xx
